SHOW REPORT | 27/01/2017 | TAJINDER HAYER
BOBBY ABLEY A/W '17
We aren’t sure whether Bobby Abley really has his finger on the pulse, or whether he is ahead of the times and creating fun menswear that is forward, interesting and uncomplicated but whatever the reason, he continues to present one of the most exciting collections at London Fashion Week Men’s.
Any man over the age of the 25 will be familiar with the Power Rangers. Countless after school hours and early Saturday mornings were spent glued in front of the TV while 5 teenagers in bright colours battled really random monsters. Bobby Abley must have been one of those young men, as his autumn collection was a full on Power Rangers fest. Abley took the shows iconic imagery and nostalgia and blended it with a modern playfulness and cutting edge & contemporary design. Whilst the colours and designs were very familiar, Abley ensured that his stamp on the pieces. Channeling the Power Rangers’ roots in martial arts, this was another key influence in the show with trailing strips in bright colours tied around models’ waists as a nod to martial arts belts. We also loved the dinosaur alter ego set as stencil-like prints on sweatshirts set against a “BA” monogram.
Abley is not a designer that shies away from putting his own personality into his collections. The words “Whatever Forever”, one of the tattoos on his hands appeared on a sweatshirt. Continuing last season’s fascination with all things Brazilian, the colours of the nation were a key theme in some of the shows closing look.
The autumn offering also presented new style tracksuits and the re-introduction of knitwear and denim. The knitwear was one of the show’s strongest features with colour blocked mohair and faux-fur panels and neoprene sweats worn with denim. In keeping with fashion’s new obsession of “see now, buy now” selected pieces were available in store and online at Selfridges immediately after the show.
