MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA
Despite its twenty year history, Maison Margiela is a brand that remains enigmatic in the fashion industry. Season after season, we see incredible pieces come down the runway, always different to other designs, setting trends as opposed to following and providing drama and excitement just as any good fashion show should.
On first glance, not everything in the collection can be worn. However, the more you look at it, the more you can see yourself sporting certain pieces and taking a dip into the avant-garde side of fashion. As one of the most revered Parisian brands, the inspiration (as well as the designer) has always been shrouded in mystery. Founded in 1988, the collection has garnered a reputation for its appreciation of imperfection, personality and eccentricity.
As the spring/ summer 2015 collection lands online at luxury store Oki-Ni, we offer an exclusive look at some of the main themes for the season. There has rarely been a collection from Margiela that has not featured white as a dominant colour, and this season is no different, with a pristine collection of outerwear, underwear and accessories like the crisp and sharp leather wallets and card holders.
Any lover of fashion will be familiar with the four white stitches that appear on the inside of each garment. Of this subtle detail, the brand says “the four white stitches provide a sense of anonymity that aligns the clothing with the wearer, rather than the designer, re-enforcing the idea of the maison as just that – a maison, not just a person.”
If there is one thing that Margiela excels it, it is recreating a contemporary version of timeless vintage garments. This is not exactly ground breaking, but the way in which it is done, is. Who has ever seen a bomber jacket, navy suit or denim in the way seen on the Margiela spring catwalk. There are some mysteries that we will probably never know the story of – the mystery of the list of numbers for example, but you can console yourself by getting your hands on the latest collection of the beautiful collection.
