FROM SELFIE TO SELF-EXPRESSIONISM
It’s hard to believe that there was a time that the word “selfie” was not a permanent feature of the English language. The newest exhibit at Saatchi Gallery, From Selfie to Self-Expressionism explores the history of the selfie from Velazquez to today, celebrating self-expressionism as a form of art.
Taking over an entire floor of the Saatchi Gallery, the exhibition focuses on how the selfie has become an iconic form of self-expression in the twenty first century. Modern photography is shown alongside more traditional works of art, to demonstrate just how important the selfie has become in the modern age and how the art form can result in images that are beautiful and sublime to mad and rather dangerous.
